Your topic and a domain

When you are purchasing a domain there is one primary thing that you need to consider. The one thing is does the name that you are looking to buy match the content that you are planning to offer on the website?

In reality whether the name matches the content or not is sometimes irrelevant, but if you can get a domain name that has a general reference at least to your website that is a good start. For businesses this can be even more important, for most businesses building their brand is the most important thing so using the name of the business in the domain name is almost essential. For a personal site, something like your name or something that seems fairly similar to yourself or one of your interests.

The other option when buying a domain is to get something that is brandable. So that means if you can find it something short and memorable that you can easily try and link to what you site is about and eventually have people almost immediately associate with your site.
